Manage your time efficiently, especially if you want to both enjoy home stay life and do well in class.

Thu from Winter 2015

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

School bus trip was fun and was a great chance to bond with classmates and teachers.

What were your goals in attending the KCP program?

Understanding Japanese culture through emerging in the language and lifestyle

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I found my Japanese improving significantly through living with my host family, since what I learn in class could be practiced right away. Not only could I have a closer look at the Japanese culture and people, we made unforgettable bonds. However, classes and exams had little room for creativity. Furthermore, in addition to memorizing rules of Japanese, I'm interested in patterns and reasonings in the language. Sometimes such questions cannot be answered in school.

What did you find most valuable in the Culture Course?

What we learnt in class such as psychology of Japanese people, tea ceremony etc. gave us insights to the community we were in, which made a valuable learning experience.

Any further thoughts or tips for those considering the program or new KCP students?

Manage your time efficiently, especially if you want to both enjoy home stay life and do well in class. Use what you learn in class outside as much as possible because I found writing them down repeatedly doesn't always stick. Go to English support! Make up your own tips in learning kanji in addition to writing them repeatedly.

Testimonials

If you want a challenge, then this program in definitely what you’re looking for. I came into the program with very basic knowledge of Japanese and am definitely excited about how much I have improved. Learning a language isn’t instant and it takes a while to sink in, but the longer you’re here you become more motivated to utilize what you learn and to continue to progress in your studies. And all of the instructors and office staff are some of the most friendly and approachable people I have ever met. They really make the whole experience quite enjoyable!
