How Can I Contact Family and Friends While Studying in Japan?

Most students stay connected through messaging apps, Wi-Fi calling, email, texting, and mobile data.

Popular options include LINE, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, Viber, and other internet-based calling apps. LINE is especially common in Japan. KCP also provides Wi-Fi in the school building and access to computers in the library area.

If your phone is unlocked, you may be able to use a Japanese data SIM or eSIM. Data-only plans are often enough because calling and messaging apps work over mobile data or Wi-Fi. Students with SIM-locked phones may prefer an international plan, pocket Wi-Fi, or a SIM-free phone purchased in Japan.

Before signing any phone or Wi-Fi contract, check monthly fees, data limits, cancellation rules, and overage charges. Do not sign a contract for someone else or take over another person’s contract.

Staying in touch is important, but daily communication with home can make cultural adjustment harder. Leave room for immersion.
